The Bike Kitchen operates under the oversight by a volunteer board comprised of community members.  The Bike Kitchen is supported by an Americorps VISTA provided through the VT-Engage – The Community Learning Collaborative.  During our start up, we are heavily dependent on volunteers who have a variety of skills to offer.

20121127_171425Having just relocated, we are have a long list of things we need to do.  The Bike Kitchen needs bike mechanics, carpenters, organizers, grant writers, event coordinators and more.  The following are our current needs:

  • Skilled bike mechanics.  We currently have a steady demand for bicycles from the community we are serving, and we have eager volunteers and customers who want to learn bike repair.  However, we need skilled bike mechanics who can mentor these individuals.  If you’re interested in mentoring a group of students once a week or some other frequency, give us a shout!
  • Elbow grease.  We just relocated to the ReStore retail location.  Our generous host has carved out a space for us, and we’re in the process of cleaning, painting and defining the space for our program. If you like to clean, paint, or have artistic skills and are interested in painting murals, be sure to contact us.
  • Grant writing and event coordination. We’re busy fixing up bikes right now to meet the demand and sprucing up the place, but we want to get some projects rolling and apply for grants.  If you have organizational and/or grant writing skills, we could sure use your help!
  • Art!  We have a pile parts that are just screaming for artistic minds to create three dimensional artworks!  If you’re interested, contact us!

Visit us on Facebook to keep up with the volunteer opportunities or email us!

If you have any interest in volunteering on one of the above teams, download the New Volunteer Form and email the Director.

Our mission at the Bike Kitchen is to create a resource hub for people to access essential neighborhood services on a recycled bicycle. To this end, we are building a social bike business to provide bikes to people without the social or economic capital to find one elsewhere.
